Emma Benozzi is an italian graphic designer and researcher based in the Netherlands. She studied graphic design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and is currently a participant of Werkplaats Typografie, Amsterdam.

Today, she develops her design practice around the research and restoration of forms of ancient knowledge—sourced from folklore, traditions and peasant societies—rooted in ecology.
This research translates into designed solutions or radical outlets for the society, to counter its geo-political failures and disruptions.

DOWN TO EARTH, ongoing project
Editorial
Risograph
12.5x25cm

This project was presented at KABK's Graduation Show of 2021. It presents a starter' set of functional gardening tools realised as a visual platform—together with a seasonal zine, they host a reactivation of the repressed archive of the cult's culture.

ABSTRACT
Whilst the majority of humanity indulged in a motionless state amidst the environmental crisis, many come up with ever-new solutions to try to slow down the inevitable—oftentimes looking at the past for an inspirational reference.
Down to Earth (Backyard Sessions) aims to restore the lost value of sustainable self-production by revisiting the methodology of the Benandanti (Good Walkers)—an agrarian cult from Friuli, Italy's north-eastern region, prominent during the 16th and 17th centuries—whose central mission was to care for the Earth’s fertility.
The urgency for today’s society lies in a radical change of its habits, which is why this project wants to open a dialogue with its audience to actively discuss the reclamation of individual craft production and renewed traditional approaches to Nature.

AS ABOVE, SO BELOW (The Fertility of the Earth, Learning from the Benandanti)
Graphic Design BA Thesis, 2020/2021
Editorial

Book and poster design of my bachelor thesis, a research on a dormant agrarian cult of Friuli, the north-eastern region in Italy, and a speculation on a modern society operating on a eco-moral code.

EXCERPT
B. There should be no word to define those like us. So much has changed. Back in our time we used to care for the little things four times a year, wielding bundles of fennel, we fought against the dark witches in the name of Mother Earth and its fertility.
Remember boy, fertile is the soil as long as our relationship with it is one of mutual respect and exchange. But we were not bound to last, young man. There has always been someone bigger than us, bigger in the eye of a lost society, someone bigger running on the path of power, promising shiny destinations to whoever followed.

3. And in the end, did you follow too?

B. No, we did not follow. Instead we've been relegated to the Archives, repressed within our own skins. We have been sent to the afterlife, accused of an all time favourite: heresy.
